Bitter Pea

The Bitter Pea is a tough, highly defensive native understory shrub growing between 1 and 2 meters tall, heavily armed with stiff, sharp, needle-like foliage. In winter and spring, it provides a striking visual display as its branches fill with dense clusters of small, bicolored pea-shaped flowers in a rich apricot-orange and deep dark-red. Its spiny structure acts as an invaluable environmental sanctuary, offering small native birds a secure place to nest safely away from larger predators.
